We’re thrilled to share behind-the-scenes insights from our very first floating solar project in Africa, installed on a hydropower dam. With a total of 22,464 modules and 13 MW, this project marks an exciting milestone for Profloating as we expand into new regions.
This project has been in development for some time and brought several unique challenges:
-
Anchoring: Large water-level variations on the hydrodam required smart engineering solutions to safely deploy the floating structure.
-
Access to the water: The remote location made it difficult to find the ideal spot to deliver materials and assemble FLOTAR®. With persistence and careful planning, we identified the right site and kicked off construction successfully.
-
Wind speed: Working and anchoring in a windy environment required robust solutions and careful planning.
-
Design challenges: The uneven and complex dambed foundation made designing the floating structure more complicated. Thanks to innovative engineering, we successfully adapted FLOTAR® to these conditions.
This project wouldn’t have been possible without the collaboration of our trusted partners Seaflex, H2air, and Energydesign.
With teamwork and innovation, we’re proud to see floating solar making its mark in Africa, bringing sustainable energy to new horizons.
